Strawberry Picking Season is in Full Swing in Virginia Beach

For a sweet treat, you can’t beat fresh picked strawberries
Famly picking strawberies

What’s the sweetest thing about spring in Virginia Beach? Fresh-picked strawberries.

Locally grown strawberries are a treat for all ages. And you almost can’t pick too many. Extras can be made into jam, pie and ice cream. Berries can also be frozen to enjoy throughout the year.

Fresh picked strawberries don’t have as long of a shelf life as store-bought, so it’s recommended not to wash berries until they are ready to eat or cook with.

Strawberry season is currently underway at some of Virginia Beach’s farms. The season lasts until the strawberries stop growing, typically at the end of May. Sometimes the season extends into early June.

If you’ve never been to pick strawberries before, now is a great time to go.

Celebrate Strawberries

Each year, the Virginia Beach Farmers Market celebrates this delightful berry at its Strawberry Jamboree. Free and open to the public, the event takes place this Saturday, May 20, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. with more than 90 vendors/artisans, food trucks and events for the kids. Special guests will make an appearance this year—the National Capital Band will be playing from 10-11 a.m.

The Virginia Beach Farmers Market is located at 3640 Dam Neck Road (on the corner of Dam Neck Road and Princess Anne Road). For more information on the market, visit virginiabeach.gov/farmersmarket.
