Red Wing Park Improvements Nearing Completion
The park will be open for 2025 Cherry Blossom Festival, March 29 - April 5.

When Red Wing Park reopens in a few months following construction of roadway improvements, visitors will notice a widened entryway to the park allowing for greater accessibility, as well as repaved parking lots and park lanes throughout the park. These improvements are essential for enhancing traffic flow and safety.
Red Wing Park closed last October to begin park upgrades. The end phase of the project is approaching, however weather conditions since the beginning of the year slowed progress of the work requiring an extension on the park closure. While construction delays due to inclement weather are factored into project schedules, the weather so far this year has been consistently uncooperative leading to poor site conditions unworkable for the contractor.
The extremely cold, freezing temperatures during January initially prevented the installation of the asphalt road. Add in snow and rain and poor sub-soils, the site has been too wet to handle the weight of large construction equipment needed to finish the project and install the asphalt road.
Completion of this project is targeted for end of June, weather permitting.

More Upgrades
Along with roadway improvements throughout the park, other projects have also been underway within Red Wing Park. The playground at the middle parking lot has been replaced with new equipment and experiences. Replacement of the existing restroom in the back of the park is currently in the design phase.
Cherry Blossom Festival
Virginia Beach Parks & Recreation invites the public to experience an array of programs and activities promoting the rich culture and beauty of Japanese music and art during the 2025 Cherry Blossom Festival. The park will reopen temporarily for everyone to enjoy the annual festival and cherry blossom blooms, March 29 - April 5.
A temporary gravel road has been installed to provide access into the park. Following the festival, public access to the park will close again mid-April to finish construction and will remain closed until the project is complete.
Alternative Spaces
During this closure, all park entryways and facilities, including playgrounds, tennis courts, walking paths, and athletic fields, are closed and unavailable to the public. The Red Wing dog park is also closed during renovations. Dog owners are encouraged to visit the Marshview Dog Park located at 136 Marshview Drive.
Alternative recreational spaces are available at many parks throughout the city. Download the VB Park Finder app to search for parks and facilities by name, location and specific features such as playgrounds, ball fields, kayak launches and more. At home or on the go, you can find the nearest park, get driving directions, view hours and see available amenities.
