November is National Adoption Month, an opportunity to celebrate the work of the Virginia Beach Department of Human Services Adoption Unit, part of the Child Welfare team in the Social Services division. Together they help children in need grow up in stable homes.Â
Teamwork Makes Dreams Work Â
The seven members of the Adoption Unit work tirelessly to help Virginia Beach children in foster care find their forever homes and provide continued support to them and their families long after adoptions are finalized. To date in 2024, the team finalized adoptions for 25 children, including those over the age of 10, children with special needs, and four siblings who were adopted together.
Finding FamiliesÂ
The Adoption Unit recruits adoptive families and partners with outside agencies to find homes for the children served. The greatest need is for adoptive families who are able to care for children over the age of 12 and with mental health diagnoses.
If you’re considering opening your heart and home to a Virginia Beach child in need of a family, or would like more info, please visit the Human Services adoption webpage.Â
