Virginia Beach Provides Update on Storm Status and Operating Conditions

The following are the latest updates for the City of Virginia Beach as of 4:30 p.m.

Storm Status

• Virginia Beach is under a flash flood warning until 5:30 p.m. Friday afternoon.
• The city is under a tornado watch until 10 p.m. tonight. A tornado watch means that conditions are favorable for tornados to form, not that one has been sighted. If a warning is issued, be prepared to take appropriate shelter.
• The National Weather Service has also issued a high wind warning until Saturday, Oct. 1, at 4 a.m.
  

Closures, Cancellations, and Changes in Operating Conditions

• The Oceanfront Area Library is closed for the remainder of the day, Friday, Sept. 30, due to a power outage.
• The Joint-Use Library at Tidewater Community College is closed through Saturday, Oct. 1, and is expected to reopen Monday, Oct. 3.
• The Virginia Department of Health Regional Community Vaccination Center in Norfolk will be OPEN Saturday, Oct. 1, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. for COVID-19 vaccinations (Monkeypox Vaccinations are now being offered once a week on Wednesdays).
• All Parks & Recreation outdoor field allocations (for recreational use) are canceled for Friday and Saturday.
• The Aquarium's dolphin-watching boat tours are canceled for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday due to strong winds and high seas.
• The Adventure Park at the Aquarium is also closed Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
  

Parking

Emergency off-street parking in City garages is available through 7 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 3. Virginia Beach residents may park their vehicles for FREE at the municipal garages at 9^th and 31^st streets in the Resort Area. Residents must exit by Monday at 7 a.m. to avoid charges. Parking is also available for residents at four municipal garages at Town Center. Individuals looking to move their vehicles to higher ground may not park in the 24-hour reserved spaces at the Town Center garages. These spaces are leased by residents, and towing will be enforced. Be aware that if garages lose power, lighting and elevators will not be operable.

Waste Management

• Waste Management does not anticipate any collection delays today.
• The Landfill and Resource Recovery Center will remain open Friday.
  
• The West Neck Recycling Center is closed Friday.
  

Roadways

• The City of Virginia Beach works with WAZE (the app is available for Android and iPhone) to document and report the latest on road conditions/closures. Residents can also report flooding or other hazardous road conditions directly on the app or by calling 311.
• Stay off the roads as much as possible, especially if they are flooded. Turn Around, Don't Drown.
  

Power

Contact Dominion Energy to report power outages at 1-866-366-4357 or online at  dominionenergy.com. Do not operate portable generators or grills (gas or charcoal) inside your home or garage. Treat all downed power lines as live.

Transit Services

According to Hampton Roads Transit, bus and light rail services are currently operating on their regular schedule, but due to possible flooding, customers are advised to expect delays and impromptu detours. Updated information will be made available on local news services, online at gohrt.com, or via Customer Service.
