Virginia Beach Ascends to Second Place in 2022 Digital Cities Survey

City climbs annual ranking of digital governments across the country

Virginia Beach has been named among the nation's top digital cities yet again, rising from third place to second place in its population category (250,000-499,000). Presented annually by the Center for Digital Government, the Digital Cities Survey ranks municipalities in five population categories on their use of technology to deliver services and enhance citizen experience.

"Equity and resilience are cornerstones of the City's digital roadmap. We want to make sure all communities are considered as we implement transformative initiatives and design infrastructure that will fortify our smart city future," said Peter Wallace, the City's chief information officer. "I attribute our Digital Cities' rank to the collective efforts of multiple departments including Information Technology (IT), Public Works and Planning as well as other partners who play a significant role in this journey."

Wallace also credits the City's improved standing in the 2022 Digital Cities Survey program to City Manager Patrick Duhaney's vision for expanding data-driven culture. The City's Office of Performance and Accountability, in partnership with IT's Data and Information Management team, has streamlined organizational performance through transparent metrics tied to City Council goals. From open data and cybersecurity to solar-powered technology and high-speed internet, Virginia Beach is developing an inclusive digital strategy that benefits residents, visitors, and businesses.

"Constituents expect more from modern governments. Our Digital Cities Survey winners have worked hard to keep the focus on the needs of the communities they serve while implementing technology to improve delivery and execution," said CDG Vice President Brian Cohen. "We congratulate them for leading the way towards a smarter and more responsive government."

Virginia Beach, along with the top 10 cities of each population category, will be honored during the Digital Cities Awards event at the National League of Cities "City Summit" on Nov. 17 in Kansas City, Missouri. This complimentary event is exclusive to the public sector. More details are available here.
