Commonwealth v. Kavitt Javon Conway; 28 Years to Serve for Stabbing Man to Death
Virginia Beach, Va. – Colin D. Stolle, Commonwealth’s Attorney for the city of Virginia Beach, announced that Kavitt Javon Conway, age 31, formerly of the 1300 block of Rugby Street in Norfolk, Virginia, pled guilty and was sentenced today for First Degree Murder. In accordance with a plea agreement, Circuit Court Judge James C. Lewis sentenced Conway to fifty (50) years in prison with 22 years suspended, leaving 28 years to serve.
Had this matter gone to trial, the Commonwealth’s evidence would have proven that on April 25, 2023, Anthony Garcia and a woman were in her vehicle with her children at a 7-Eleven store in Norfolk. The woman and Kavitt Javon Conway had been in a four-year-long violent and tumultuous relationship. Conway approached the vehicle, began to bang on the windows, and demanded that Garcia and the woman exit the vehicle. He then reached into the vehicle through the sunroof and pulled on Garcia’s hair. Garcia and the woman fled in their vehicle.
Conway got into his vehicle and pursued Garcia and the woman onto the interstate. Conway rammed into their vehicle several times, despite the woman pleading with him to stop because her children were in the car. Garcia drove to his aunt and uncle’s home approximately twenty (20) minutes away. Once he arrived, he ran to the front door to get help. Conway jumped out of his vehicle and tackled Garcia. His aunt and uncle heard the commotion, grabbed their firearm, and ran outside. Garcia’s uncle saw him being attacked and threatened to shoot Conway. Conway jumped off of Garcia and fled. He had inflicted eight (8) stab wounds to Garcia, killing him before rescue could arrive. Conway fled to Henrico and police found him in a hotel room a few days later.
Conway has prior convictions for Trespassing, Petit Larceny, and Destruction of Property (misdemeanor).
Chief Deputy Commonwealth’s Attorney Scott M. Lang and Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Jason M. Kowalski prosecuted this case. Please contact Macie Allen if additional information is desired.
