VBPD Secures National “Gold Standard” Again for Rapid Ballistic Intelligence

On July 22, 2026, the Virginia Beach Police Department Forensic Services Unit (FSU) announced that it has successfully retained its National Integrated Ballistic Information Network (NIBIN) “Gold Standard” designation, a recognition that reaffirms the unit’s position as one of the nation’s top-performing sites.

A NIBIN acquisition digitally scans toolmarks on spent bullet casings to match ballistic data. This process helps police link separate shootings, track illegal guns, and identify repeat shooters.

The FSU completed all 657 NIBIN acquisitions in an average of 0.88 days during the recent ATF audit from December 1, 2025, to May 31, 2026. This fast turnaround beats federal goals and gives police fresh leads to fight gun crime quickly.

The Virginia Beach Police Department earned “Gold Standard” status, highlighting its effective use of ballistic intelligence and high coordination to reduce violent crime.
