VBPD Makes Arrest in Shooting Incident on 3900 Block of Bonney Rd
On October 29, 2023, at 1:05 A.M., the Virginia Beach Emergency Communications and Citizen Services (ECCS) received a call reporting a gunshot wound victim in the 3900 block of Bonney Road.
Officers from the Virginia Beach Police Department (VBPD) responded to the scene and located a victim (M/37) with a gunshot wound to the leg. The victim was transported to a local hospital and is expected to survive.
Officers from the Third Precinct Crime Suppression Squad (CSS) and a VBPD K9 Unit promptly apprehended Zakaria Horton (F/27) of Norfolk and Verlandon Smith (M/37) of Norfolk in connection with the shooting. Horton has been charged with the following offenses: Aggravated Malicious Wounding, Use of a Firearm in Commission of a Felony, Shooting into an Occupied Vehicle, Shooting in City Limits resulting in Injury, and Carrying a Concealed Firearm without a Permit.
As a result of the investigation, Smith was arrested and charged with a separate firearm violation, Felon in Possession of a Firearm.
