5/31 Memorial Committee to Meet Oct. 10 for Project Update
The next meeting of the City Council-appointed 5/31 Memorial Committee will be 4:30-6 p.m., Oct. 10, at the Virginia Beach Economic Development Conference Room, 4525 Main St., Suite 700. The meeting is open to the public and also will be available via live streaming on VirginiaBeach.gov/media and the City’s Facebook page.
The purpose of this meeting is to receive an update from Dills Architects regarding the final design of the permanent memorial as the project enters the construction phase. The memorial will be built on City-owned property at the corner of Princess Anne Road and Nimmo Parkway.
Committee Background:
In December 2021, City Council appointed 13 members to the committee, representing a cross-section of the community, including family members and affected staff members. In February 2022, the consulting firm of Kearns & West began facilitating the committee and memorial planning process, which included multiple opportunities for the families, survivors and community to provide input into the planning process. The committee’s work culminated in a design completion and solicitation from professional design teams across the nation who were interested in and capable of creating a serene place of quite reflection and healing for all those impacted by and in remembrance of those lost and injured on May 31, 2019. Upon recommendation of the committee in April 2023, the City contracted with Dills Architects, a Virginia Beach-based firm, to design the memorial.
