VBPD Investigating Fatal Crash on Independence Blvd. / Ewell Road
On June 5, 2023, at 7:08 A.M., Virginia Beach Emergency Communications and Citizen Services received a call for a crash at Independence Blvd and Ewell Rd. intersection. Witnesses reported that a small U-Haul box truck traveling northbound on Independence Blvd. passed through the intersection and crashed into the traffic signal pole in the north median of Independence Blvd.
Emergency services were dispatched to the scene and rendered aid to the driver, Randall Sava (M/24) of Jacksonville, Florida, the passenger, Katrina Stone (F/28) of Beverly Hills, Florida, and their dog, Draco. Sava was taken to a local hospital for treatment of his injuries. Stone was also taken to the hospital but later succumbed to her injuries. Draco was taken into the custody of Virginia Beach Animal Control. He is expected to survive.
Sava was treated and released from the hospital whereupon he was taken into custody. He was charged with Misdemeanor Driving without a License, Felony Possession of Schedule I/II Narcotics, and Misdemeanor Animal Neglect.
This case is under investigation by the VBPD Traffic Safety Unit and is open and ongoing.
