VBPD and HSI Seize 156 Pounds of Methamphetamine in Major Drug Bust
On Nov. 7, 2024, a joint investigation by the Virginia Beach Police Department (VBPD), the Chesapeake Police Department, and Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) led to the seizure of 156 pounds of methamphetamine, marking it the largest single methamphetamine seizure in the history of Department. This significant operation is a major blow to methamphetamine distribution in the Hampton Roads area, which has been a growing concern for local law enforcement.
On Nov. 7, 2024, officers from the VBPD, working alongside HSI agents, approached Alonzo Harden Jr. (M/54) of St. Paul, Minnesota, in the 4400 block of Bonney Road. The approach was part of an ongoing investigation into drug trafficking in the region. A Narcotics Detection Canine, Luna (NDC Luna), was utilized on the encounter to conduct an open-air sniff around the suspect’s vehicle. NDC Luna alerted to the presence of illegal narcotics, prompting a search of the vehicle.
The search led to the discovery of two large bags in the trunk of the vehicle, which contained the methamphetamine. The total weight of the drugs seized was approximately 156 pounds, with an estimated street value of $350,000.
Alonzo Harden Jr. was arrested and is currently facing multiple charges, including:
- Possession with Intent to Distribute Methamphetamine (3rd offense)
- Possession of a Schedule I/II Controlled Substance
- Possession of a Concealed Firearm
- Felon in Possession of a Firearm
- Possession of a Firearm While in Possession of a Schedule I/II Substance
- Transporting a Schedule I/II Substance with Intent to Distribute into the Commonwealth
“This seizure represents a major step forward in disrupting the methamphetamine distribution networks operating in the Hampton Roads area,” said Virginia Beach Police Chief Paul Neudigate. “The significant quantity of methamphetamine seized during this operation will prevent the distribution of thousands of doses of the dangerous drug, potentially saving lives and protecting the community. Our collaboration with HSI was critical in the success of this operation, and we are committed to continuing to work together to keep our community safe from the dangers of illegal drugs.”
