UPDATE: Arrests Made in Spring Court Homicide Investigation

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA, February 15, 2023 – Three suspects have been arrested in relation to the incident that occurred on January 11, 2023 (initial incident report below).

Naji Amir Johnson (M/18) of Virginia Beach has been charged with Felony Murder, Robbery, Use of a Firearm in the Commission of a Felony, and Motor Vehicle Theft.

One juvenile (M/14) is charged with Felony Murder and Use of a Firearm in the Commission of a Felony.

Another Juvenile (M/17) is charged with Felony Murder, Robbery, Conspiracy to Commit Robbery, and Use of a Firearm in the Commission of a Felony.

These charges are the result of a comprehensive investigation that was completed by the Virginia Beach Police Department (VBPD) Homicide Unit. This case is still under investigation.

VBPD Investigating Possible Homicide – 400 Block of Spring Court

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA, January 12, 2023 – On Wednesday, January 11, 2023, Virginia Beach Police Department (VBPD) responded to a report of a vehicle that had struck an apartment building, crashing through the wall of an apartment.

Upon arrival, personnel from Virginia Beach Fire Department (VBFD) attempted to render aid to the driver, Gregory James Smith Jr. (M/33) of Newport News, VA. While attempting to aid Smith, VBFD noticed the driver was possibly suffering from an injury believed to be a gunshot wound. Smith was declared deceased on scene. The exact cause of death has not yet been determined by the Medical Examiner’s Office.

While working on the victim, the vehicle caught on fire, which then caught the apartment on fire. The residents of the apartment were contacted and confirmed safe.
