Poll Workers’ Information Involved in Data Security Incident at Software Vendor Used by City of Virginia Beach

​The City of Virginia Beach Voter Registration & Elections Office recently learned of a data security incident that occurred at a company used by the city to manage poll worker information. The information of three Virginia Beach poll workers was contained in the files involved.

In January, EasyVote Solutions, a Georgia-based software technology company that provides elections management platforms, experienced a data security incident that involved some of their clients' information. An investigation found that personal bank information for three Virginia Beach poll workers was included in the files involved. The Virginia Beach Voter Registration & Elections Office instruct poll workers to provide their bank information for direct deposit purposes in person and was not aware that the three workers had provided their information via a document upload option in the EasyVote system.

"We take seriously our responsibility to safeguard the information in our care," said Ron Davis, EasyVote's CEO. "We have moved the files to a more secure environment and have taken steps to enhance our existing security measures as part of our ongoing commitment to cybersecurity."

Virginia Beach uses EasyVote Solutions' web-based software system for poll worker management only. The software system is not connected to the city's voter registration computers and is not used for election results or to generate or count ballots.

"This incident was limited to a very small number of individuals in our system," said Christine Lewis, Virginia Beach acting director of elections. "No other functions of the city's voter election system were involved or affected by the incident."

EasyVote will be notifying the three poll workers involved.
