More Than Just a Summer Job

Applications for the 2022 Virginia Beach Summer Youth Employment Program Open Jan. 17

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The application period for the 2022 Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) begins on Monday, Jan. 17. Virginia Beach Parks & Recreation's Youth Opportunities Office is seeking Virginia Beach residents ages 16-21 for this career-building opportunity. Each year, SYEP employs over 100 individuals across city agencies and private businesses. Interested applicants looking to have a meaningful summer job experience that provides financial literacy skills, mentorship, coaching, and more should apply by March 7 at VBgov.com/SYEP.

"SYEP helped me understand that the most important thing you can do for yourself and your future is to set aside money for saving," said past SYEP participant Don J. who worked in the city's IT department. "A habit of saving can help you achieve financial freedom, and preparation for emergencies."

SYEP is open to Virginia Beach residents, ages 16 to 21, and runs from June 21 to August 12. Participants will earn at least $11 per hour, working an average of 27-35 hours per week during the eight-week program. Applicants will be screened, interviewed, and matched with prospective employers by SYEP staff. Workplace readiness, financial empowerment training, and career coaching are also provided during the orientation and throughout the entire program.

For additional information about becoming an SYEP participant, contact Andrea Holloman at 757-385-0432 or email SYEP@vbgov.com.
