Human Services Adult and Aging Division to Host Elder Abuse Awareness Walk

Public invited to participate June 14 at Mount Trashmore Park

Raising awareness and providing resources to fight elder abuse is the focus of a new awareness walk. The Virginia Beach Department of Human Services Adult and Aging Division will host the first Elder Abuse Awareness Walk, 10 a.m. to noon, June 14, at Mount Trashmore Park in observance of Elder Abuse Awareness Month. It is free and open to the public.

Elder Abuse Awareness Month is a time to raise awareness about the abuse, neglect, and exploitation that millions of elderly and vulnerable adults face. World Elder Abuse Awareness Day is June 15.

“Elder abuse affects a significant number of seniors in our community,” said Aileen L. Smith, director of the Virginia Beach Department of Human Services. “The Elder Abuse Awareness Walk will provide another opportunity for the Adult and Aging Division to provide information and resources to members of our community. We all need to work together to support the elderly and vulnerable individuals in our community and increasing awareness is just one of the ways to do this within the month of June.”

Register for the event online. Registration is preferred but not required to participate.

The Virginia Beach Department of Human Services Adult and Aging Division establishes and strengthens appropriate family and social support systems to protect adults at risk of abuse, neglect or exploitation and to prevent the occurrence of abuse, neglect or exploitation.
