Accidental Discharge of Firearm/Self Inflicted Gunshot Wound- Malibu Palms Drive

​VIRGINIA BEACH, VA – On January 1, 2022 at 0038 hrs, Virginia Beach ECCS received a call from Sentara Princess Anne Hospital stating a male was dropped off at that location suffering from a gunshot wound to his left ankle. The victim, Marquise Ryan Billups (M/22), informed officers that while he was walking to his car near Malibu Palms Drive, he had been shot in the left ankle.

Further interviews were conducted with Billups as part of the investigation. After speaking with the investigators, Billups ultimately confessed to firing his firearm multiple times into the air at midnight and that he accidentally shot himself as he was getting into his vehicle.

Billups was charged with Reckless Handling of a Firearm.

This case is being investigated by officers assigned to the Third Precinct with assistance from the Detective Bureau.
