The Value of Volunteerism

This week, the City of Virginia Beach recognizes the thousands who donate their time and talents to help keep our City's services vibrant and intact.
EMS Volunteers

As part of National Volunteer Week (April 16-22), the City of Virginia Beach would like to thank the nearly 9,400 people who volunteered at various City locations in FY22, performing all kinds of jobs, from assisting with the annual point-in-time count for the Department of Housing & Neighborhood Preservation to caring for animals at the Virginia Beach Animal Care and Adoption Center.

Those 9,400 volunteers served more than 790,000 hours, which equates to $23,663,777 of valuable service – a 3.8-cent savings on the real estate tax rate. The Office of Volunteer Resources’ Annual Report for FY22 provides even more statistical data on the value volunteerism brings to the City of Virginia Beach.

Founded in 1978, the City of Virginia Beach Office of Volunteer Resources and its volunteer program celebrates its 45th anniversary in 2023. The continued success of this program can be attributed to strong advocacy of volunteerism from leadership, talented Volunteer Resource Managers and the thousands of residents that dedicate their time to our organization.

Volunteer today!

Virginia Beach has several opportunities for you to donate your talents, such as providing guided tours and educating visitors at one of our history museums, joining the largest volunteer-based EMS program in the country, or by adopting a park, highway, trail or waterway and organizing cleanups to remove litter.
