When Maria Bosques applied for a position at the City of Virginia Beach, she was intrigued by the idea of working for the city where her family calls home. “I love the city of Virginia Beach. I love the people,” she said.

Having experience with contracts as a paralegal, Maria was drawn to a contract specialist position in the Public Works Department. A central function of this job is to move a contract through all the proper steps to be approved as a purchase order, which is what enables construction and other contracted work to begin.

As a self-proclaimed ‘people person,’ Maria enjoys interacting with workers in many different roles. “In my job, I meet the contractor. I work with the project managers, my team, other divisions,” she said. “I love that I get to see what’s going on in the City.”

Maria appreciates the ways her job directly impacts her community. “I see the construction, the engineering going on around town, and I smile,” she said. “I tell my family, ‘Hey, I'm part of that team!’”

While learning the nuances of contracts and procurement in local government, Maria credits her co-workers with setting her up for success.

“If I have a question, I can go to someone on my team. They give me the information I need, and I roll with it,” she said. “We work together, and we succeed together.”
