2024 Oceanfront Event Season Meeting Covers Potential Resident Impacts Through July 4

The community meeting presented event-related logistics for Oceanfront events with special parking, traffic and public safety planning needs.

To keep residents informed about Oceanfront event-related logistics, public safety planning and communications, City staff shared information about Oceanfront events at a community meeting on March 28. The first meeting covered events through July 4 with anticipated attendance of more than 10,000 per day, and another meeting will be held to cover events through the end of the year.

The City’s goal for the 2024 event season is the same as it has always been — to enable residents and visitors to enjoy their time in the city, while ensuring the City is fully prepared to address issues such as traffic, crowds, safety and public communication.

Prior to each of these events, “know before you go” information for that event will be added to VirginiaBeach.gov/EventInfo, which will serve as the central communications hub for event-related impacts all year long. This information will also be shared via City social media and email channels prior to each event.

Public Safety

Safety and security are a top priority for the City and the community. The Virginia Beach Police Department has a Special Event Task Force dedicated to public safety planning throughout the year, and it plans collaboratively with Emergency Medical Services (EMS), Emergency Communications and Citizen Services (ECCS), Emergency Management, Fire, Public Works, Sheriff’s Office and partner agencies. PD, Fire and EMS all have response plans and staff for the entire Oceanfront area. Contingency plans are also in place for unexpected emergencies, and citywide situational awareness and monitoring occurs during all of these events. Staff review after-action reports from previous events during the planning process to address previous issues and create future best practices.

During events, all public safety agencies are at a single command post to ensure seamless communication. During event weekends, these agencies are staffed for the entire city in addition to the event area.
