Numerous Shots Fired at VBPD Officer
​VIRGINIA BEACH, VA, Wednesday, August 2, 2023 – On August 2, 2023, officers from the Virginia Beach Police Department's (VBPD) Fourth Precinct Crime Suppression Squad were conducting plainclothes surveillance in the 1100 block of Craftsman Drive regarding a recent theft from the auto offense.
At approximately 2:15 A.M., several suspects fired numerous gunshots at an officer who was driving in their unmarked vehicle. The officer discharged his service weapon from inside the vehicle in response to the gunfire.
The officer immediately fled the scene. The involved officer was not struck by the gunfire but was subsequently treated for lacerations from broken glass.
All suspects originally fled on foot, a subsequent search of the area by responding officers located two individuals who were detained. After investigation, both subjects have been charged as follows: a 16-year-old male from Norfolk has been charged with two counts of Tempering with an Automobile, Shooting at a Vehicle, Possession of a firearm by a Juvenile, Possession of an Extended Ammunition Magazine in Public; a 16-year-old male of Virginia Beach has been charged with two counts of Tempering with an Automobile, Shooting at a Vehicle, Possession of a firearm by a Juvenile.
There is no additional information on the outstanding subjects. It is not believed anyone was struck by police gunfire at this time.
The VBPD Homicide Unit is conducting a criminal investigation into this incident. Upon completion, all evidence will be turned over to the Virginia Beach Office of the Commonwealth Attorney (OCA) who will determine if there are any violations of law. In addition to the VBPD investigation, the OCA conducts its own parallel, independent investigation. Upon conclusion of the criminal investigations, the VBPD Internal Affairs Bureau will conduct an administrative review to determine whether the actions in this incident complied with department policy, procedure, and training.
