No Time to Visit the Library in Person? No Problem. Get a VBPL Account Online Now!

Virginia Beach Public Library (VBPL) now offers an online option so you can apply for a new library account at your convenience. Whether you apply online or in person, VBPL accounts are free for Virginia Beach residents and provide instant access to digital resources such as e-books, audiobooks, digital music and magazines, streaming video, online learning platforms like LinkedIn Learning and numerous research tools. Those who do not live in Virginia Beach may also get a VBPL account online for a nominal fee. With a VBPL account, you may also visit VBPL branches to borrow books, DVDs, CDs, technology items such as wireless hotspots, robotic toys and more.

"We are excited to add the convenience of online account registration at VBPL," said Clara Hudson, support services administrator. "You'll find great services and helpful staff in our branches, but not everyone is able to visit the library in person. Online account registration extends library access for those who can't come in person, as well as those who prefer to access content digitally."

Prior to the launch of VBPL's online application, customers had to come into a library branch to apply, show identification and verify their address. An exception was made during the pandemic, when a digital-only account was offered by phone. Now, identification and verification happen in just a few clicks. Newly registered customers receive an account number that gives instant access to VBPL's digital library and the ability to check out materials in person. If the customer's identity cannot be verified during the online application process, they may still receive access to VBPL's digital collection for 21 days while staff help complete the verification.

Visit www.VBgov.com/library-account to apply for a new VBPL account. The online application applies only to new library customers. If you need to renew an existing account, please call (757) 385-0150.
