Next Meetings of 5/31 Memorial Committee to Review RFP Submittals
The next meetings of the City Council-appointed 5/31 Memorial Committee will take place from 4-9 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 16, and Thursday, Nov. 17, at The HIVE, 140 Independence Blvd., Virginia Beach.
The sole purpose of these meetings is to discuss the review of and recommendation for the award of a public contract involving the expenditure of public funds. Accordingly, the committee intends to open the meetings and immediately recess into a closed session. At the conclusion of the closed session, the committee will reconvene into open sessions to certify the vote.
While all meetings of the 5/31 Memorial Committee are open to the public and live-streamed, the primary substance of these meetings will be conducted in a closed session. Members of the public may attend at the start of the meeting while the vote is taken to adjourn to the closed session, and again at the conclusion of the closed session while it is certified. No announcements will be made during these two days regarding vendor selection.
Committee Background
City Council appointed 13 members to the committee, representing a cross-section of the community and including family members and affected staff members. The City hired consulting firm Kearns & West to facilitate the committee and memorial planning process, to serve as a liaison to the families and survivors, and to create multiple opportunities for the families, survivors, and community to provide input into the planning process.
