Residents can learn how to reduce waste and get free reusable totes as Virginia Beach marks Zero Waste Awareness Week, Sept. 1-7.

Members of the Virginia Beach Clean Community Commission (VBCCC) will present to Virginia Beach City Council on Sept. 3 with ways that residents can minimize their waste. That evening, commissioners will distribute reusable totes at the formal Council session.

To cap off the week, the Virginia Aquarium and Marine Science Center will provide reusable totes to the first 100 people to attend the E-cycling Event on Sept. 7. From 9 a.m. to noon, participants can recycle old cellphones, used vehicle batteries, personal electronic items, unneeded prescriptions, cardboard and more. The event will be a drive-through in the Aquarium’s East Parking Lot.

The first full week of September is designated as Zero Waste Awareness Week. The VBCCC reminds everyone to minimize their household waste by reducing, reusing, recycling correctly and re-purposing. For more tips on minimizing waste, visit the Keep Virginia Beach Beautiful Facebook page

The VB Clean Community Commission is appointed by City Council to promote litter prevention, recycling, beautification, and general environmental awareness through educational projects designed to reach all segments of the community.
