Councilmember Worth Remick hosted a community meeting for District 6 on Aug. 10 at Virginia Beach Middle School. His agenda focused on updates from Planning, Police and Public Works.

Toni Utterback with Public Works Stormwater Engineering discussed ongoing projects including North Lake Holly, drainage improvement projects in Seatack, along First Colonial Road, Oceana Boulevard, the 24th Street culvert, and projects that have either begun or are about to begin and will be completed between now and 2025.

Dave Jarman with Public Works Transportation presented updates on a number of road projects in the district, including the First Colonial Road and Virginia Beach Boulevard project, the Laskin Road 1-A and the Laskin Bridge Replacement, the 17th Street Phase from Pacific to Cypress,18th Street improvements and Atlantic Avenue road and pedestrian improvements.

Captain Harry McBrien with the Second Precinct gave an update with the latest crime statistics for the district, focusing on the Oceanfront. He said that violent crimes were down by 13%; property crimes were up by 7%; fatal deaths by shooting were down 100%; non-fatal shootings were down by 38%.

In response to a question about human trafficking, Captain McBrien explained that the department has a very active and involved program. He said that residents might not hear much about their efforts, but that is mainly because it is a very covert operation that requires undercover officers and little-to-no publicity. He also explained other efforts the department has been making throughout the district in other areas of crime prevention.

Hannah Sabo and Pam Witham from Planning discussed the latest on short term rentals and took a number of questions and concerns from the attendees.
