Virginia Beach Career Fair Fire Department

Our employees don’t just work here — they grow here. Last year, more than 950 City of Virginia Beach employees were promoted in title and compensation.

Navigating the hiring process may feel complicated — but it doesn’t have to. These five tips can simplify the road to getting hired by the City of Virginia Beach, where you can begin a meaningful new career serving a beautiful beachside community.

Set up job alerts

If there’s a position you’re excited about that isn’t currently posted, it’s easy to set up job alerts. As soon as a position opens with your search criteria, an email will be sent to notify you.

To set up job alerts, head to our listing of available positions. Enter your search criteria, then click on the bell by “Set a Job Alert.” Submit your email address, and you’ll be the first to hear when new opportunities arise that fit your interests.

Talk to our recruiters

Whether you have questions about a specific job description or the interview process, speaking directly with a recruiter is a great way to get your questions answered. The City of Virginia Beach has two ways to do that — virtually and in person. The Human Resources Department offers a virtual Q & A every Thursday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. EST. All you have to do is reserve a spot.

A great way to connect with a recruiter in person is to attend a job fair. Our recruiters often attend job fairs hosted by universities, military organizations like Hire Vets Now and other career development organizations. Once a year we even host our own career fair. To learn where we’ll be next, follow the City of Virginia Beach on LinkedIn.

Show you meet the preferences and key skills

Within the duties and preference section, every job advertisement highlights essential skills and required proficiencies. When you fill out your application, your past work experience and/or certifications and credentials must show you meet these requirements and preferences. Applications that most favorably demonstrate these preferences will be forwarded to the hiring manager. So, make sure to clearly state your years of experience, list your credentials and thoroughly describe your experience so your application will receive full consideration to move on to the next step of the hiring process.

College students: Apply for an internship

The City of Virginia Beach’s award-winning internship program is designed to provide students with an opportunity to apply knowledge from their field of study in a professional environment. Depending on positions available, some interns may even be hired as full-time employees (check out the stories of these interns hired by Budget & Management Services and ECCS). Students enrolled in a college/university are invited to learn more about the program and apply for our current internship opportunities.

Military: Join us through Skillbridge

If you’re about to separate from the military, a Skillbridge fellowship through Hire Vets Now provides an opportunity to try out another career that interests you before committing to it. The City of Virginia Beach is continually growing our fellowship opportunities. To learn more about how you can get this valuable hands-on experience, attend one of our virtual Q & A’s.
