Emergency Communications and Citizen Services held a graduation ceremony for its 61st and 62nd VB9-1-1 Recruit Academy on Feb. 21, at the Meyera E. Oberndorf Central Library.
After an extensive eight-week classroom training, the six graduates have begun their on-the-job training to include police radio positions and call taking before being advanced to the next stage in their career progression. This process takes approximately 12-18 months.
The dedicated emergency telecommunicators link residents with the help they need whether that involves dispatching public safety members to an accident or helping to connect residents with services. They’re an integral part of the City’s first responders.
Last year, Virginia Beach emergency dispatchers fielded more than 419,295 calls for service. They also issued 118 emergency notifications via the City’s reverse 9-1-1 system and VBAlert (text and email).
To help aid dispatchers, residents are encouraged to create a Smart911 Profile and register for VBAlert.
