VBPD Makes Speedy Arrest in Apex Shooting Incident

On Saturday, February 24, 2024 at approximately 4:10 p.m., Virginia Beach Emergency Communications and Citizens Services (ECCS) received multiple calls describing shots being fired in the 4600 block of Columbus Street. Witnesses who called into ECCS described what they believed to be an active shooter situation.

Upon arrival, VBPD officers located several spent shell casings by an entrance to a parking garage. They quickly began systematically clearing each level of the structure, eventually locating what was determined to be the single suspect: Eric Oliver (M/30) of Portsmouth, Virginia. Oliver was taken into custody without incident and officers recovered a Glock 23, .40 Caliber Pistol, equipped with an extended magazine on his person.

No injuries were sustained during this incident. A total of 12 Felonies and Misdemeanors were secured against Oliver: two counts of Shooting into an Occupied Dwelling, (Felony), Use of Firearm in Commission of a Felon (Felony), Violent Felon in Possession of a Firearm (Felony), Discharge of a Firearm within City Limits, (Misdemeanor), two counts of Destruction of property (Misdemeanor), Reckless Handling of a Firearm (Misdemeanor), Carrying a Loaded Firearm in Public (Misdemeanor), Shooting Across a Roadway (Misdemeanor), and Public Intoxication (Misdemeanor).
