VBPD Recognized by Best Friends Animal Society for Exemplary Care at Animal Care and Adoption Center
For the second consecutive year, the Virginia Beach Police Department’s Animal Services Bureau (ASB) has been recognized with the No-Kill Award by the Best Friends Animal Society, highlighting the Bureau’s efforts in humanely caring for animals at the Animal Care and Adoption Center (ACAC).
The Best Friends Animal Society, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, operates the nation’s largest sanctuary for homeless animals and provides adoption, spay/neuter, and educational programs. The organization’s No-Kill Award is reserved for shelters that save at least 90 percent of dogs and cats that come into the shelter.
After a 90.3 percent save rate in 2022, the ASB saved 90.4 percent of cats and dogs in the shelter in 2023.
“This is no small achievement for a municipal shelter,” said Marcie Fox, Captain of the ASB. “Our team of dedicated caretakers, behavioral consultants, and veterinary team perform exceptional work to ensure animals at our shelter find their way to their forever family.”
The ASB offers humane care to unwanted, stray, abused or abandoned animals in Virginia Beach, while aggressively investigating cases of animal cruelty. ASB staff and volunteers work tirelessly to find homes for shelter animals. Visit the Virginia Beach Police Department website to learn more about the Animal Control Unit, and visit the ACAC website for more information on sheltering and adoption.
