VBPD Makes Arrest in Fatal Shooting Incident at Atlantis Apartments

On June 29, 2024, at 3:06 A.M., the Virginia Beach Emergency Communications and Citizen Services (ECCS) received a call regarding a victim suffering from a gunshot wound in an apartment at the Atlantis Apartment complex. Virginia Beach Police Department (VBPD) officers and Emergency Medical Services responded to the scene. The victim, Jesus Alfredo Jeronimo Can, (M/24) of Virginia Beach, was pronounced deceased on scene.

The VBPD Violent Crimes Unit conducted a swift and thorough investigation, identifying the suspect, Brian James II (M/20) of Virginia Beach, within less than 24 hours of the incident.

James was subsequently taken into custody by the VBPD SWAT team and the Warrant Fugitive Unit at approximately 9 PM on June 29, 2024. James has been charged with Second Degree Murder and Using a Firearm in the Commission of a Felony.
