VBPD Investigating Fatal Crash on Indian River Road
On August 27, 2025, at 6:40 p.m., Emergency Communications and Citizen Services (ECCS) received a report of a two-vehicle crash in the 4700 block of Indian River Rd. Officers from the Virginia Beach Police Department (VBPD) responded to the scene.  Â
The first driver, Claire Hurt (F/50) of Virginia Beach, was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver of the second vehicle remained on scene and cooperated with officers.Â
A preliminary investigation revealed that Hurt’s vehicle, which was traveling southbound on Indian River Road, drifted out of its lane and was subsequently struck by a second vehicle heading northbound. Â
On December 13, 2025, traffic investigators updated the case, concluding that drug impairment, specifically the presence of THC, contributed to the incident.Â
“Even at low concentrations of impairment it still affects cognitive and motor function,” said Chief Paul W. Neudigate. “This reinforces the medical community’s warning that drug use, especially polydrug use, poses a serious risk on the road."Â
At this time, no charges are anticipated. Anyone with information relating to this incident is asked to contact VBPD at (757) 385-4606 or submit anonymous tips through Crime Solvers at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP or P3Tips.com.Â
