NIBIN Technology Links VBPD Arrest to Chesapeake Offense Resulting In Charges
On Oct. 15, 2024, officers from the Virginia Beach Police Department (VBPD) responded to the 700 block of Brook Meadow Ct. for a home invasion robbery.
The investigation ultimately led to the arrest of Timothy Lane (M/21) of New Jersey on charges of Daytime Armed Burglary, Armed Robbery, two counts of Use of a Firearm in Commission of a Felony, Wearing a Mask, and Felony Destruction of Property.
A firearm was recovered during the arrest and submitted to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms’ (ATF) National Integrated Ballistic Information Network (NIBIN), which linked it to a shooting offense that occurred in Chesapeake on Oct. 14, 2024. Evidence was shared with the Chesapeake Police Department, who later charged Lane with Shooting at an Occupied Dwelling, Vandalism over $1,000, Conspiracy to Commit Vandalism, Possession of an Auto Sear, Possession of a Stolen Firearm, Carrying a Loaded Firearm with Extended Magazine, Reckless Handling of a Firearm, and Willful Discharge of a Firearm in a Public Place.
“Technology is a force multiplier for our department, as it is for other departments in our region and across the country,” said VBPD Chief Paul Neudigate. “We’re thankful to have our own NIBIN equipment that allows us to quickly enter fired cartridge cases to determine if they have been involved in other offenses and share this information with our regional law enforcement partners to keep Hampton Roads safe.”
(Note: The charges mentioned in this press release are accusations, and the arrested individual is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.)
