License Plate Reader/Camera Technology Leads to Arrest in Armed Robbery of Postal Worker
The Virginia Beach Police Department (VBPD), in partnership with the United States Postal Service and the Hampton Police Department (HPD), arrested a suspect in connection with the robbery of a postal worker that occurred on July 11, 2024, in the 3400 block of Dandelion Crescent.
On the day of the incident, an individual later identified as Cameron Hunter Brown (M/27) of Portsmouth, approached the postal worker, produced a firearm, and robbed the victim.
During the investigation, VBPD detectives utilized Flock license plate reader technology and security cameras to identify and locate the suspect vehicle in Hampton, Virginia. On July 17, 2024, the HPD located the vehicle along with Brown, who they arrested and charged with Felony Evade & Elude, Felon in Possession of a Firearm, Possession of Stolen Firearm, Reckless Handling of Firearm, and Possession of Machine gun.
On July 31, 2024, the VBPD secured warrants for Brown related to the July 11 incident in Virginia Beach, to include Robbery, Use of a Firearm in Commission of a Felony, Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon, Conspiracy to Commit Robbery, and Felony Wearing a Mask in Public. Brown was served with these warrants on Aug. 7, 2024, while in custody at the Western Tidewater Regional Jail.
“The brazen robbery of a public worker serving this community cannot be tolerated. I applaud the work of our VBPD detectives and the officers of the Hampton Police Division for their diligence in solving this case. With this quick arrest, they send a strong message to those that would prey on our citizens that there are swift and certain consequences for violent crime”, said Police Chief Paul Neudigate. “In addition to the great police work, technology once again aided those efforts with both the Flock camera system and security cameras playing a key role. By providing real-time data and capturing essential details like vehicle license plates, we can quickly identify suspect vehicles to aid in our investigations. This technology routinely enhances our ability to keep the community safe and ensures that we're utilizing all means to protect our community.”
(Note: The charges mentioned in this press release are accusations, and the arrested individual is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.)
