Update to Gas Leak at Military Highway and Indian River Road
Update 8:40 a.m.
Virginia Natural Gas (VNG) has contained the gas leak at Military Highway and Indian River Road. Currently, all southbound lanes of Military Highway are open. Â
The northbound closure is still in effect. Crews are working to open two northbound lanes as soon as possible.Â
Dominion Energy is working in conjunction with VNG to safely return power to impacted area, which will take time. Â
6:40 a.m. | City of Virginia Beach Responds to Gas Leak at Military Highway and Indian River Road
At approximately 2:40 a.m. on Jan. 29, 2025, the City of Virginia Beach experienced a gas leak near Military Highway and Indian River Road. At this time, there is no threat to the public.Â
At this time:
- No injuries have been reported as a result of this incident.Â
- Electric power has been turned off to a small area at the 700 block of Military Highway. Approximately 700 locations, to include businesses and residences, are without power.Â
- The City is actively working with Virginia Natural Gas (VNG) to assess the extent of the impacts. Â
- City response resources have been mobilized.Â
- Emergency Response Plans have been activated. Â
The City of Virginia Beach's top response priorities are to:Â
- Ensure the safety of City residents and the publicÂ
- Ensure the safety of all responders and City personnel on the sceneÂ
- Control and contain the incident and conduct appropriate recovery actions using established response plansÂ
- Re-open roads and restore power as soon as possibleÂ
The City of Virginia Beach strives to ensure the safety and security of all residents. We have engaged our emergency personnel to provide an effective response and to mitigate the impacts from this incident in partnership with Virginia Natural Gas.
