City of Virginia Beach Operating Schedule for July 4-5, 2024
Waste collection service for Thursday, July 4, will occur Saturday, July 6. Waste collection service for Friday, July 5, remains unchanged.

July 5, 2024 - The National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat warning from 11 a.m.-8 p.m. on Friday, July 5. Heat index values up to 110 are expected. Due to the combination of high temperatures and humidity, the impacts of heat-related illness are increased.
Things to Know
- Drink plenty of fluids.
- Stay out of direct sunlight when possible.
- Do not leave children or pets in unattended vehicles. Temperatures inside will reach lethal levels in a matter of minutes.
- Those working outside should take frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned areas.
- Recognize the signs of heat stroke and call 911 immediately. Heat stroke is severe medical emergency - delay could be fatal.

June 26, 2024 - The following Virginia Beach facilities will be closed Thursday, July 4, and Friday, July 5, in observance of the Fourth of July holiday with some additional changes noted below:
- All Virginia Beach government administrative offices
- All Virginia Beach community recreation centers (Recreation centers open July 5, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.)
- All Virginia Beach public libraries including the TCC/City of Virginia Beach Joint-Use Library
- Commonwealth’s Attorney Office
- Sandler Center for the Performing Arts box office and administrative offices (Box office open July 5.)
- The Bruce W. Edwards VBEMS Headquarters and Training Center
- Virginia Beach Circuit Court, General District Court, Juvenile and Domestic Relations Courts and Clerk’s Offices
- Virginia Beach Convention Center administrative offices
- Virginia Beach Department of Public Health
- Virginia Beach History Museums
- Voter Registration & Elections Office
- Waste Management administrative offices, the Landfill and Resource Recovery Center and the West Neck Recycling Center
The following facilities will be open to the public July 4-5:
- All Virginia Beach city parks and park facilities are open regular hours including the Lynnhaven Boat Ramp & Beach Facility
- EMS lifeguard stands at the Oceanfront (1st to 42nd streets), the North End, Croatan, Sandbridge and Little Island Park: Staffed 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. then continue with active beach patrolling until sunset; EMS field operations and marine response in service
- Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Advanced tickets available for purchase at tickets.virginiaaquarium.com
- Virginia Beach Animal Care & Adoption Center: Noon to 5 p.m.
- Virginia Beach Convention Center: 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. for events
- Virginia Beach Farmers Market will be open. Visit virginiabeach.gov/farmersmarket for individual merchant’s store hours. (The Farmers Market Management Office will be closed July 4-5.)
- Visitor Information Center at Chesapeake Bay Center: 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
- Visitor Information Center at Parks Avenue: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
- Visitor Information Center Kiosks 17th Street & 24th Street at the Oceanfront: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Residents who normally receive waste collection (trash, recycling, yard waste, bulky item) on Thursdays will instead have their cans serviced on Saturday, July 6. Friday collection for July 5 will remain the same.
