Virginia Beach Public Utilities Wraps Up Water Tank Dismantling Project

The outdated tank has been removed from the Municipal Center and the area will be repurposed as green space.

Dismantiling of Courthouse Water Tank

Have you noticed something missing near the Virginia Beach Municipal Center? Virginia Beach Public Utilities recently finished the dismantling and removal of the Courthouse Water Tank, once nestled between Building 30 of the Municipal Center and a nearby residential neighborhood.

The Courthouse Water Tank was constructed in 1971 to serve an area of the city that had once primarily relied on well water sources. After almost four decades of service, the tank no longer had the capacity to meet the demands of the area’s growing population. In 2013, the tank was taken offline and replaced by the 1.5-million-gallon Nimmo Water Tank on Princess Anne Road.

As part of its Aging Infrastructure Program, Virginia Beach Public Utilities began the six-month-long project of dismantling and removing the Courthouse Water Tank in late February 2024. The last pieces of the water tank were hauled away in early July. The final phase of this project is to repurpose the tank’s former home into a green space maintained by the City of Virginia Beach.
