The Value of Volunteerism in Virginia Beach
Recognizing the thousands of volunteers who donate their time and talents to the City of Virginia Beach during National Volunteer Week, April 21-27.
City of Virginia Beach volunteers are dedicated individuals who help to keep City services vibrant and intact. They perform all kinds of jobs at various City locations, from providing guided tours and educating visitors at one of our history museums to assisting staff and kids in Parks and Recreation’s Out-of-School Time Programs.
Volunteer Service for FY23
As part of National Volunteer Week (and month), the City of Virginia Beach would like to thank the nearly 11,200 people who volunteered in FY23. Those volunteers served more than 797,700 hours, which equates to $25,367,039 of valuable service – the equivalent of a 3.8-cent savings on the real estate tax rate.
Some highlights for FY23 include:
- 104 engaging volunteer resource managers with the Office of Volunteer Resources
- 98 customers assisted by career coaches at Virginia Beach Public Library
- 874 pounds of litter removed by more than 260 volunteers with Virginia Beach Parks & Recreation
- 2,472 tutoring hours provided by First Grade READS program volunteers with Virginia Beach GrowSmart
- 53,000 calls answered by volunteers with Virginia Beach EMS
- 519 volunteer hours provided in support of Life Safety Education with the Virginia Beach Fire Department
The Office of Volunteer Resources’ annual report for FY23 provides even more statistical data on the value volunteerism brings to the City of Virginia Beach.
Founded in 1978, the City of Virginia Beach Office of Volunteer Resources and its volunteer program celebrates its 46th anniversary in 2024. The continued success of this program can be attributed to strong advocacy of volunteerism from leadership, talented volunteer resource managers, and the thousands of residents who dedicate their time to our organization.
