Ripe for the Picking: Local Farms Report Bountiful Fields During Peak Strawberry Season
The first crop to signal the start of warmer weather is strawberries.
Virginia Beach is the largest producer of strawberries in the Commonwealth and the city’s local berries have been enjoyed for centuries. The area’s temperate climate and nutrient-rich soil combine to make a flavor and size unlike anywhere else. Early settlers even shipped them back to England as a delicacy.
Currently in peak season, local farmers are reporting a large number of berries are ripening now. Check out the Virginia Beach Strawberry Guide to learn where to pick or purchase your own fresh Virginia Beach strawberries before the season concludes in mid-June.
Strawberry Jamboree
The Virginia Beach Farmers Market will once again celebrate this delightful berry at its annual Strawberry Jamboree, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 18. Shop the Butterfly Society of Virginia's plant sale, and enjoy a craft show, children's activities, food, music and more.
The Virginia Beach Farmers Market is located at 3640 Dam Neck Road (on the corner of Dam Neck Road and Princess Anne Road). For more information about the market, visit virginiabeach.gov/farmersmarket.
