Recognizing Hardworking Employees Who Ensure Our Vibrant Landscapes Thrive
Join our team of employees who grow beauty and support sustainability in every park and garden.
Parks Supervisor Cherie (middle) and members of Park & Landscape Services
The City of Virginia Beach is grateful to have dedicated staff who create lush and blooming landscapes, as well as maintain and cultivate the vibrant gardens and green spaces across the city. From groundkeepers to horticulturists, these professionals bring nature to life and help produce a healthier, more sustainable community.
City employees play a major role in helping prioritize eco-friendly practices in parks, such as using native plants in landscaping, implementing water conservation methods and maintaining sustainable gardens. Many parks feature rain gardens and stormwater management systems to protect local waterways and improve environmental health. In fact, Virginia Beach’s parks have been recognized for their excellence by receiving accreditation and the prestigious Gold Medal Award from the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA).
Virginia Beach is home to 200+ parks and public spaces that provide ample opportunities for outdoor recreation and relaxation. The city also boasts more than 7,000 acres of parkland, including a variety of recreational facilities, such as athletic fields, playgrounds, trails and open spaces. Whether through vibrant community gardens, public parks or sustainable landscaping projects, Virginia Beach’s green spaces contribute to the beauty, health and well-being of our residents.
As part of National Garden Month, the City of Virginia Beach is proud to recognize two passionate employees from Virginia Beach Parks & Recreation.
Cherie, Parks Supervisor
Working for the City for 25 years, Cherie (pictured above) has held multiple positions in the department. Today, she leads a landscape crew that manages 14 sites across the city. She says she enjoys her job because it “allows me to work by the water, create beautiful landscapes and provide excellent customer service to residents and visitors.”
For Cherie, the most rewarding part of the job is the appreciation and compliments from the community. Hearing that her parks are a “well-kept secret” makes it all worthwhile.
Jenna, Horticulturist
Originally aspiring to be a veterinarian, Jenna discovered a love for the outdoors while helping with a family landscaping business. Jenna began her journey with the City three years ago, starting as a Groundskeeper I and pursued a degree in horticulture, advancing to her current role. She now contributes to pollinator gardens and beautification projects citywide, including a colorful transformation along Northampton Boulevard.
Jenna’s favorite gardening tips: know your plant material, understand your garden space, account for plant maturity and consider sun exposure — all critical factors for plant success. She also advises waiting to trim plants, as many pollinators rely on them for habitat.
National Garden Month is a time to celebrate the beauty and importance of public gardens, sustainable practices and educational programs. The City is thankful to everyone who helps our community remain green and beautiful.
