Fire Prevention Week: Five Tips for Safe Handling of Lithium-Ion Batteries
Virginia Beach Fire Department is educating the public on the importance of buying, charging and recycling lithium-ion batteries.
Lithium-ion batteries have revolutionized modern life. They power many of the devices we rely on every day — smartphones, laptops, e-bikes, lawn tools, drones, toys and more. While these batteries offer efficiency and longer battery life, they also carry fire risks if not handled properly.
National Fire Prevention Week (FPW), Oct. 5-11, is a public safety campaign to raise awareness about fire safety and prevention. This year’s theme is “Charge into Fire Safety™: Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home.” In recognition of FPW, the Virginia Beach Fire Department (VBFD) is highlighting the importance of buying, charging and recycling lithium-ion batteries.
Five Key Tips to Stay Safe
- Buy Certified Devices: Always choose products tested by a Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory to ensure they meet safety standards.
- Charge Safely: Follow manufacturer instructions and use only the charger provided. Avoid charging near flammable materials or in extreme temperatures. For larger items (such as e-bikes, scooters), charge away from exits and sleeping areas — preferably outside — and never overnight.
- Watch for Warning Signs: Stop using devices that show signs of damage — swelling, punctures, excessive heat, odd smells, hissing or popping noises, or wispy smoke. They are all signs of the potential for causing a fire.
- Recycle Devices and Batteries Responsibly: Never discard batteries, chargers or battery-powered devices in regular trash bins. Take old or damaged batteries to a certified recycling facility. The Virginia Beach Landfill & Resource Recovery Center offers free disposal or recycling of lithium-ion batteries for residents or visit call2recycle.org to find a recycling location near you.
- React Quickly to Fire: If a battery catches fire, get out immediately and call 911. Close doors behind you to slow the fire's spread and follow your escape plan.
