Senior Showcase Honors, Awards Older Residents of Virginia Beach
Sponsors needed for annual event that offers free resources, entertainment and more
The Virginia Beach community can honor and thank the city’s older residents at the annual Senior Showcase, 9 a.m. to noon, Wednesday, May 27, at Princess Anne Recreation Center.
The Mayor’s Commission on Aging presents the event, featuring a resource fair of vendors for senior residents, entertainment and lunch, free to seniors. Sponsors are needed to continue to offer the event for free. Organizations can choose to sponsor the event at various levels, some including exhibitor space. To ensure sponsors are included in the promotional materials, the online form and payment must be received by March 30. Call 757-385-2616 for questions on sponsorships.
In addition, awards are presented to individuals or organizations that promote, change or add services for seniors of Virginia Beach, benefitting a large segment of the senior community, within the past year. Anyone can submit nominations for these awards, which will be selected and presented by the Mayor’s Commission on Aging during the Senior Showcase. Nominations are accepted now through April 22 and may be submitted online or to the Office of the Mayor.
The Dr. Lanny Hampel Award for Exemplary Service to Senior Citizens is presented to officially recognize individuals who provide exceptional service to seniors. The service or initiative must extend significantly beyond the requirements of employment duties and responsibilities.
The Meyera E. Oberndorf Award for Exemplary Service to Senior Citizens is presented to officially recognize organizations, businesses, community groups or government entities that provide exceptional service to seniors. The service or initiative must extend significantly beyond the requirements of employment duties and responsibilities.
Registration is required to attend the Senior Showcase and is open April 15-May 26 only, online or by calling 311. Doors open at 9 a.m., and a box lunch is served at 11 a.m. This year’s theme is “Virginia Beach: Riding the wave of the silver tsunami.”
