New Online Hub Makes It Easier Than Ever to Track City’s Appointive Agencies

New portal consolidates meeting materials and board information into a single, user‑friendly online destination.

A new way for residents to stay informed about City decisions is now available on VirginiaBeach.gov. Beginning May 1, residents will have access to a single online portal to find agendas, meeting documents, member listings and view vacancies for the City’s appointive agencies, often referred to as boards and commissions.

These groups, such as the Planning Commission, Community Services Board, the Agricultural Advisory Board and others, are appointed by City Council and have delegated authority to handle tasks and business within their areas of responsibility. Because they are appointed by City Council, their work is a matter of public record and open to residents to attend and review.

Residents can easily find boards with vacancies and submit an application to join one or more that meets their interests and qualifications. Applications are regularly reviewed by City Council and if approved, new members are appointed as vacancies allow. Term lengths and meeting frequency vary by board.

Why the Switch?

Put simply: to make it easier for residents to find information about their government.

Previously, meeting agendas and documents were posted to a given body’s webpage on whichever department site it belonged to. This required anyone looking for information to find that page to look up that information.

Putting everything into a single portal eliminates the need to find a specific webpage and provides a consistent experience, regardless of which appointive agency someone wants to know more about.

The new portal can be accessed through the appointive agencies webpage on VirginiaBeach.gov, or directly at Onboardgov.VirginiaBeach.gov.

For more information or assistance with the new portal, please contact the City Clerk’s Office at 757-385-4036 or email Terri Chelius at TChelius@vbgov.com.
