Join Our Team: Learn about Upcoming Career and Volunteer Opportunities with the City of Virginia Beach

This month, two City departments are hosting events to share paid jobs and volunteer opportunities. Virginia Aquarium will host a virtual open house for volunteers, and Parks & Recreation will host a job fair at Bow Creek Recreation Center. 
 
Details are below, along with information about career, volunteer and internship opportunities currently available with the City of Virginia Beach. 

Virginia Aquarium Virtual Volunteer Open House 
Feb. 13, 4:45 p.m., Virtual 

The Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center offers meaningful ways to support the environment and local conservation through volunteering. Explore a variety of engaging volunteer opportunities at the Virginia Aquarium, such as educating visitors about the animals and conservation, through the Virtual Volunteer Open House. Meet and chat with Aquarium staff and learn about volunteer opportunities and openings available for youth, adults and student internships. 

Advance registration is required. After registering, a confirmation email will be sent with information on how to join the event. 

Virginia Beach Parks & Recreation Job Fair
Feb. 27, 4-7 p.m., Bow Creek Recreation Center 

Virginia Beach Parks & Recreation (VBPR) will host a job fair to find energetic, dedicated employees to fill hundreds of spring and summer part-time positions. The department brings on 350-500 staff members annually to fill these seasonal positions that have the potential to extend into the fall. Positions with particularly high demand include childcare staff, groundskeeping and lifeguards.

VBPR hiring managers and team members will be on site to answer questions for interested applicants. Explore current job openings.

Human Resources Weekly Recruiter Q&A Sessions 
Thursdays, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Virtual 

Have questions about a specific job description or the interview process? A great way to get your questions answered is to speak directly with a recruiter. The Department of Human Resources hosts weekly virtual question-and-answer sessions for anyone interested in a career with the City of Virginia Beach.

If you’re a student looking to gain meaningful experience to help jumpstart your career or add to your professional studies, the City of Virginia Beach has opportunities for you, too. 

2025 Summer Youth Employment Program 
Submit applications by March 12 

Virginia Beach residents ages 16-21 can apply for the 2025 Summer Youth Employment Program. Each year, this career-building opportunity employs over 100 individuals to work at various City agencies and private businesses. The eight-week program runs from June 16 to Aug. 6. 

Internships for College Students 
Applications accepted now and ongoing 

The City of Virginia Beach’s award-winning internship program is designed to provide students with an opportunity to apply knowledge from their field of study in a professional environment. Depending on positions available, some interns may even be hired as full-time employees. Current internship opportunities are offered by the departments of Budget & Management Services, Parks & Recreation, Public Utilities and Public Works. Apply now to be considered for spring/summer internship positions.

The City of Virginia Beach recognizes the tremendous reserve of knowledge and skill within our community and encourages adult and youth residents to contribute their valuable time and talents to a variety of jobs on a volunteer basis.  

Through the Office of Volunteer Resources, Virginia Beach has several opportunities for you to donate your talents, such helping the Farmers Market with educational tours for kids to learn more about agriculture or assisting in community outreach efforts with the Public Engagement Division to promote City initiatives, programs and opportunities for residents to provide feedback.
