Ages & Stages: Five Ways to Stay Healthy While Aging in Virginia Beach

Discover City offerings for improving your physical, mental and social well-being.

According to the latest U.S. Census data, a little more than 17% of the city’s residents are ages 65 or older, which equates to more than 78,000 residents. The City of Virginia Beach offers many resources, assistance, programs and special events for this valued population. 

Healthy Aging Resources

Here are just five ways older residents can take advantage of City offerings to stay healthy and improve their physical, mental and social well-being this fall.  

1. Events and Training
Explore special events, games, exercise, arts and crafts, excursions and more for ages 55 and older at Forever Young Senior Centers at Virginia Beach Parks & Recreation rec centers.

2. Brain Health
Activate your brain with Virginia Beach Public Library's (VBPL) diverse array of enriching programs and events from board games, genealogy, Battle of the Books – Adult Edition and more.  

3. Public Safety
Learn how to avoid being the victim of crimes at Senior Safety Lectures presented by the Community Liaison Program of the Virginia Beach Police Department.  

4. Resource Guide
The Senior Housing and Resource Guide can help connect you or a loved one with a variety of resources, from a list of independent and assisted living communities; tips for downsizing, retirement and senior rights; and other related services. Compiled by the Mayor’s Commission on Aging, download it now or find limited print copies at VBPL branches.   

5. Skill Boost
Explore employment and small business assistance offered by City departments:

Ready to discover more City offerings for seniors? At VirginiaBeach.gov/AgesandStages, you can filter more than 90 programs, special events, resources and assistance from across 30 City of Virginia Beach departments. Browse the listings from A to Z or filter by type and audience: children and families, teens, adults, seniors and caregivers. If you have questions about any of the services, call 311 for more information. 

In addition, you can sign up to receive email newsletters about things to do and City offerings tailored for your interests.  

Other ways to connect with the City include visiting the public meeting calendar, Be in the Know blog and social media pages.   

Use mobile apps such as VB Connect to find City information and services, and VB Go, to find more than 6,000 events in Virginia Beach across multiple calendars.
