April 26-30, 2025: Middle Lane - Emergency Sanitary Sewer Repair
Middle Lane at the intersection of Michigan Avenue
An emergency sanitary sewer repair will result in the closure of Middle Lane at the intersection of Michigan Avenue starting at 8 a.m. on Saturday, April 26. This repair is expected to be completed by 5 p.m. on Wednesday, April 30; weather permitting. Warning signs will be placed advising motorists of the utility work and detour routes.

For roadway projects and utility work, advanced warning signs will be clearly posted advising motorists of lane closures/detours. Traffic delays, congestion and some construction noise are likely to occur. Drivers are urged to use alternate routes when possible. All construction work is weather permitting.

Winston Salem Avenue between Baltic Avenue and Arctic Avenue closed to through traffic

Through traffic on Winston Salem Avenue is detoured to Mediterranean Avenue via Norfolk Avenue. Mediterranean Avenue is open and the parking spaces along Mediterranean are being used to maintain traffic flow. During the day, workers will direct drivers around the work zone.
Access to homes and businesses located on the closed section of these streets will be maintained. Information about the improvements being made and the detours in place can be found at VirginiaBeach.gov/WinstonSalem.
South Plaza Trail from Rosemont Road to Presidential Boulevard

Every effort will be made to keep any inconveniences to a minimum during this time. Access to homes and businesses located on the closed section of this street will be maintained. Emergency services, postal deliveries and waste collection will continue without delays or interruptions throughout this project.
South Independence Boulevard near Columbus Street

- Work: HRSD to rehabilitate and replace a sanitary sewer pipeline across South Independence Boulevard

Beginning as early as Dec. 30, HRSD will work to rehabilitate and replace a sanitary sewer pipeline across South Independence Boulevard near Columbus Street. Be aware, traffic patterns will shift and will include partial lane closures. Access to homes and businesses will be maintained. This portion of the work is anticipated to be completed in four to six months.
South Birdneck Road near Bells Road Intersection
- Work Hours: 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday-Saturday
- Work: Dominion Energy Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind construction

Lane closures and daytime traffic delays are expected on South Birdneck Road near Bells Road. At least one lane of South Birdneck Road will be open in both directions. Please follow posted signs, flagger instructions and speed limits. Sidewalks for pedestrians and cyclists will remain available.
Monmouth Lane between Locke Lane and Marlborough Drive
- Work Hours: Closure is 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday; road will reopen daily at 5 p.m.
- Work: Ongoing sanitary sewer system rehabilitation project. Expected completion of this particular closure/phase is May 30.

During construction, there will be noise and the contractor will be staging material and equipment in the City right-of-way. Residents will have access to their homes at all times. Every effort will be made to minimize any inconvenience.
Bonney Road from Rosemont Road Independence Boulevard

- Work: Milling and pavement operations

Drivers can expect temporary lane closures April 21-25 due to pavement operations along Sandbridge Road, from the Sandpiper Road intersection heading west to 665 Sandbridge Road. There will be a flagging operation to maintain traffic both ways during the lane closure.
South Birdneck Road at Jackson Street will have two weekend closures that will impact both lanes of travel.
- Work Hours: April 25-28, 7 p.m. Friday to 9 p.m. Monday; May 2-5, 7 p.m. Friday to 9 a.m. Monday. Work hours will be 24-hour days for both closures.

The first closure and detour beginning on April 25 will be the southbound lanes of S. Birdneck Road. The second closure and detour beginning on May 2 will be for the northbound lanes of S. Birdneck Road.
Sandbridge Road from Sandpiper Road heading west to 665 Sandbridge Road

- Work: Pavement operations along Sandbridge Road.

VDOT roadwork will close the I-264 east off ramp to Laskin Road/Virginia Beach Boulevard (exit 20) between the hours of 10 p.m. and 5 am. from April 22-24. Detours will be in place and drivers are advised to use alternate routes.

Before each of the Oceanfront events with an anticipated attendance of more than 10,000 per day (subject to change), “know before you go” information for that event, including road closures, are added to VirginiaBeach.gov/EventInfo.
Don’t Sit on Colon Cancer 5K
During the morning of Saturday, March 22, 2025, there will be temporary road closures to accommodate the Don’t Sit on Colon Cancer 5K race. Beginning at 8:30 a.m., there will be no access to: Medical Parkway & Glenn Mitchell Dr., Medical Parkway at Dam Neck Rd., Medical Parkway at Concert Dr., and Glenn Mitchell Dr. within the Sentara Hospital Complex Assembly Area. All roads are expected to reopen at 11:30 a.m. In addition to the road closures, Hampton Roads Transit (HRT) bus routes will have alternate drop-off locations for access to the hospital complex during the race.
