VBPD Makes Arrest in New Colony Drive Homicide
On July 18, 2025, approximately 9:57 p.m., Virginia Beach Emergency Communications and Citizen Services (ECCS) received a report of a shooting in the 5500 block of New Colony Dr.
Upon arrival, Virginia Beach Police Department (VBPD) officers located a male victim in the roadway suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. Officers provided life-saving efforts until the victim was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced deceased. The victim has been identified as Jamele Newby-Gibson (M/20) of Virginia Beach.
Detectives with the VBPDās Homicide Unit conducted an extensive investigation, which led to the identification of Nashaun Reid (M/19) of Virginia Beach as the suspect. Reid was taken into custody and has been charged with Second Degree Murder and Use of a Firearm in the Commission of a Felony.
āI have to commend the work of our first responding zone officers and our detectives who diligently worked this case from the onset and were able to identify, apprehend, and charge the suspect in this offense within six hours from the time of the incidentā, said Chief Paul Neudigate. Ā āTo be able to remove a dangerous individual from our community and bring closure to a grieving family in such a short period speaks volumes to their dedication and professionalism.ā
