VBPD Investigating Fatal Crash on Dam Neck Road
On July 19, 2025, at 10:15 p.m., officers from the Virginia Beach Police Department (VBPD) responded to the 1100 block of Dam Neck Rd. for a crash involving a pedestrian.āÆĀ
Officers arrived on scene and located Matthew McGovern, (M/62) of Virginia Beach, deceased at the scene.Ā The driver of the involved vehicle stayed on scene and cooperated with investigators. No charges have been filed at this time and the preliminary investigation indicates the pedestrian failed to yield to vehicular traffic which had the right of way.Ā
āWe continue to see fatal and injury crashes where pedestrians failing to obey basic traffic laws are a contributing factor. This trend is concerning and avoidable,ā said VBPD Chief Paul Neudigate. āWe urge everyone, both drivers and pedestrians to remain alert, follow traffic laws, and prioritize safety. Our goal is to prevent these tragedies, but it requires accountability from everyone on the road.āĀ
