VBPD Achieves Prestigious Gold Standard CALEA Accreditation

Today, Chief Paul W. Neudigate announced that the Virginia Beach Police Department (VBPD) has earned its seventh consecutive CALEA accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, a "Gold Standard" recognition that highlights the department’s unwavering commitment to public safety and professional excellence.

CALEA Accreditation is an honor that requires a comprehensive, multi‑phase review of departmental policies, practices, and operational procedures. The process includes a rigorous self‑assessment, evaluation by independent public safety professionals, structured interviews with agency personnel and community stakeholders, and an opportunity for public feedback to ensure transparency and trust.

The accreditation remains in effect for four years, during which the department retains all privileges associated with this status. Maintaining accreditation requires continuous compliance with CALEA’s standards and a sustained commitment to accountability, professionalism, and community‑focused service delivery.

It reaffirms our baseline promise to protect and serve Virginia Beach with the highest level of accountability.”

CALEA Executive Director W. Craig Hartley, Jr. congratulated the department, noting that CALEA Accreditation is the “Mark of Professional Excellence” and should be displayed proudly by agencies that have earned this honor.
