VBFD’s Peer Support Team Accredited by the Commonwealth of Virginia
The Virginia Beach Fire Department (VBFD) is proud to announce that its Peer Support Team (PST) has been officially accredited by the Commonwealth of Virginia. This significant milestone recognizes the department’s commitment to providing comprehensive mental health and emotional support for its firefighters and first responders.
Granted this month, the accreditation signifies that the PST meets the rigorous standards set forth by the Commonwealth, ensuring that the team is equipped to provide confidential and effective mental health resources, guidance, and assistance to personnel facing emotional or psychological challenges.
Firefighters and first responders often face high-stress environments and traumatic events as part of their daily responsibilities. The PST was created to provide a safe, supportive space where personnel can seek help from colleagues who have undergone specialized training in mental health awareness, crisis intervention, and emotional support. The accreditation underscores VBFD's proactive approach to addressing the mental well-being of its members.
In addition to providing peer-to-peer counseling and support, the team is also trained to recognize signs of trauma, stress, and burnout, offering referrals to professional counseling services when needed. The team works in collaboration with local mental health professionals and organizations to provide a full spectrum of care.
With this accreditation, the Virginia Beach Fire Department joins an elite group of public safety agencies across Virginia recognized for their commitment to the mental health of their personnel. The department is committed to continue to enhance its mental health initiatives, ensuring that all members have access to vital support resources.
