VBFD is Hiring and Accepting Applications for Fire Academy #20 through Wednesday, May 20th

The Virginia Beach Fire Department is now accepting applications for Fire Academy #20 (Fall 2026). The application period runs from April 21 through May 20, 2026.

Prospective applicants are also invited to attend an Open House on May 1, 2026, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Harry E. Diezel Fire Training Center (927 S. Birdneck Road). Attendees will tour the state-of-the-art training facility, explore fire apparatus and equipment, and gain firsthand insight into what it’s like to serve as a Virginia Beach firefighter. Firefighters and wellness staff will be on hand to answer questions and assist with the application process.

Applicants are encouraged to get a head start by completing the Candidate Physical Abilities Test (CPAT), which evaluates the physical skills necessary to perform essential firefighting tasks safely and effectively. Please note successful completion of the CPAT is required for employment consideration.
