Red Wing Park Reopens June 14 Following Roadway Improvements

Just in time for summer, popular Virginia Beach park opens with traffic improvements.

Red Wing Park is reopening on June 14 with newly completed roadway improvements. After a temporary closure since April 23, the park is ready to welcome the community back with a refreshed experience.

The upgrades include a widened entryway, newly repaved park lanes, improved parking areas to enhance traffic flow and visitor safety, and a new traffic pattern inside the park. Vehicles will now travel counterclockwise around the loop road on Sakura Lane, helping to improve circulation and safety for all visitors.

Originally acquired by the county in 1879 and once known as the "Old City Poor Farm," Red Wing Park was officially developed into a public park in 1966. Today, it welcomes residents and visitors with a vibrant mix of recreational offerings, beautiful gardens, open green spaces and pollinator-friendly initiatives.

Notable features include the Reba S. McClanan Fragrance Garden, Miyazaki Japanese Garden and Bee City USA Pollinator Garden. Combined with well-maintained trails and diverse amenities, Red Wing Park is a popular destination for families, nature enthusiasts and community gatherings.

Park amenities include:

  • Five picnic shelters with charcoal grills
  • Tennis, pickleball, basketball, handball/racquetball and volleyball courts
  • Two playground areas with therapeutic cradle swing seats
  • Cornhole boards and open play fields
  • Public restrooms and wooded trails
  • Dog park and scenic gardens

Shelters may be reserved for events by calling 757-385-PARK (7275). For more information and event updates, visit parks.virginiabeach.gov.
